“I asked Ruairi to design and carve an escutcheon for us to install above our doorway in France. He has a wonderful blend of obsession with detail and creative flair for design

“ Although an escutcheon is essentially a two-dimensional device, Ruairi’s sculpture was three-dimensional with the lion starting out of the shield and other devices deeply inset.  The shield itself is bevelled to attract the attention of passers-by.

“ The high-quality stone was sourced from a private quarry and the grain used for effect on the surface of the shield.  Added to which, Ruairi installed the sculpture, using a cunning design of fixing support, providing security but allowing the possibility of removal.  I was in the unusual position of insisting on a payment above his estimate, because the work was so good. ”
